Addiction Medicine

The treatment of addiction and substance abuse is an ever-growing field. When they are first admitted into inpatient treatment, most individuals will undergo a comprehensive detox regimen, essentially flushing the substance(s) of abuse from the body and preparing the addict for longer-term counseling. The process requires the oversight of specially-trained medical professionals such as Dr. Raskin. Patients are usually treated in an inpatient setting for the most comprehensive care, since the withdrawal from drugs or alcohol can be significant.

To maximize the comfort of patients in withdrawal, Dr. Raskin is certified in the use of Suboxone®, a brand name of buprenorphine which is used to treat opioid dependence. Opioids are drugs derived from opium, itself extracted from the poppy plant. Opioids come in many forms, including heroin and common prescription pain medications such as codeine, morphine, oxycodone and others. Today, prescription drug abuse is one of the leading health crises in the United States, both in adolescents and adults. Suboxone® is an opioid itself, used for the purpose of replacing the illicit drug. When used under proper medical supervision it can mitigate some of the withdrawal symptoms experienced by withdrawing addicts.

Dr. Raskin is affiliated with a premier addition treatment facility, Cliffside Malibu. By joining forces, they have had the opportunity to treat hundreds of individuals, though comprehensive detox, with a great measure of success.

Treatment for substance abuse and addiction does not end when treatment does. Addicted individuals fight a lifelong battle against relapse and often consider themselves in recovery for the rest of their lives. For that reason, Dr. Raskin assists these individuals in their long-term care through tailored relapse prevention.
